Overview

Ghost ants get their name from their pale, translucent abdomen and legs that make them hard to spot on light surfaces. They have a contrasting dark head and thorax, giving them a two-toned look. Native to tropical regions, they are well established in northern Australia and often hitchhike south in potted plants. They nest in wall voids, behind cupboards, and inside pot plants. Because they're so small, they can get into sealed containers and are a common kitchen nuisance.

How to identify

  • Extremely small — 1.3–1.5 mm
  • Dark brown or black head and thorax
  • Pale, almost translucent white or milky abdomen and legs
  • Single-file trails along benches, sinks and window frames
  • Often found near moisture: sinks, kettles, pet water bowls

Pro Tip

Ghost ants are so small they can squeeze through the threads of a jam jar lid. Store sugary foods in containers with rubber seals.
