A03 · Ant
Black House Ant
Ochetellus glaber
Tiny shiny black ants attracted to sweets and grease. The most common kitchen ant in Australian homes.
- Size
- 2.5–3 mm
- Habitat
- Wall cavities, gardens, kitchens
- Activity
- Warm months, day and night
Overview
Black house ants nest outside in soil or wall cavities and forage indoors along well-worn trails. They're a hygiene concern — they can carry bacteria from drains and bins onto food surfaces. Spraying the trail kills foragers but doesn't kill the colony; baiting is the only long-term fix.
How to identify
- Shiny black, 2.5–3 mm
- Single trail of workers along skirting, benches or window frames
- Often nest under pavers, in pot plants or in wall cavities
