Black House Ant

Ochetellus glaber

Nuisance

Tiny shiny black ants attracted to sweets and grease. The most common kitchen ant in Australian homes.

Size
2.5–3 mm
Habitat
Wall cavities, gardens, kitchens
Activity
Warm months, day and night

Overview

Black house ants nest outside in soil or wall cavities and forage indoors along well-worn trails. They're a hygiene concern — they can carry bacteria from drains and bins onto food surfaces. Spraying the trail kills foragers but doesn't kill the colony; baiting is the only long-term fix.

How to identify

  • Shiny black, 2.5–3 mm
  • Single trail of workers along skirting, benches or window frames
  • Often nest under pavers, in pot plants or in wall cavities
