Australian Cockroach

Periplaneta australasiae

High

Large outdoor cockroach that flies well and moves indoors during humid weather. Common in Queensland and northern NSW.

Size
23–35 mm
Habitat
Gardens, greenhouses, sub-floors
Activity
Year-round, peak in summer

Overview

The Australian Cockroach looks similar to the American but is slightly smaller and has a bright yellow margin on the pronotum. Despite its name, it originated in Africa and is now widespread across tropical and subtropical Australia. It prefers greenhouses, gardens and mulch, but enters homes through gaps and drains during wet or hot weather. It's a strong flier and an active climber.

How to identify

  • Large, 23–35 mm, dark reddish-brown
  • Distinct yellow margin on the pronotum (shield behind head)
  • Fully developed wings, both sexes fly well
  • Often found in gardens, mulch, under bark and in compost

Pro Tip

Australian cockroaches are strong fliers. If you see one on the ceiling at night, check your outdoor lighting — they follow light through open windows.
